Wildfire Public Meetings June 21 & 22 

Public meetings to provide information about the Pains Bay Fire will be held next week at various locations throughout Dare County. 

Officials from the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Dare County, including local Public Health representatives, will discuss the fire, firefighting techniques, smoke drift, and related health concerns.  A question and answer session will follow short presentations. 

The meetings will be held Tuesday, June 21 and Wednesday, June 22 as follows:
Tuesday, June 21 – 10:00 a.m. in Rodanthe Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building, Milepost 39.5, Rodanthe (across the street from Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station) 2:00 p.m. on Roanoke Island Dare County Administration Building (Commissioners Meeting Room), 954 Marshall Collins Drive, Manteo Wednesday, June 22 – 10:00 a.m. in Southern Shores Kern P. Pitts Center, Town Hall Complex 5375 N. Va. Dare Trail 2:00 p.m. Kill Devil Hills Town Hall (Commissioners Meeting Room), 102 Town Hall Drive

The 70 square mile fire, which started from a lightning strike and was reported on May 5, is burning on the Dare County mainland, approximately one mile west of Stumpy Point and 9 miles south of Manns Harbor.  Over 200 personnel from various local, state and federal agencies are involved in firefighting efforts.
