Located in Nags Head, The Outer Banks Hospital is a 21-bed acute-care facility. A not-for-profit critical access hospital, the hospital is a partnership between University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. It is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and has been nationally recognized for outstanding patient care.

The hospital’s medical specialties include: anesthesia, cardiology, cardiopulmonary, colonoscopy and endoscopy, family practice, general surgery, internal medicine, laboratory with blood bank, nuclear medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics (including total joint replacement), pathology, pediatrics, rehabilitation (including occupational, physical and speech therapies) and radiology.

The Emergency Department, which treats more than 23,000 patients per year, offers a team of highly qualified emergency physicians who are dedicated to providing efficient, safe and compassionate care. The specialized staff treats heart problems, strokes, automobile accidents, work and home injuries, poisonings, burns and other serious conditions. The department has 21 beds, including two trauma bays, an isolation room, cast room, two gynecologic exam rooms, suture room and four ambulatory outpatient beds. A helipad is located adjacent to the ambulance entrance of the Emergency Department, allowing Dare County EMS and other air ambulance services to transport major trauma patients from the hospital by helicopter.

The hospital has two state-of-the-art operating rooms, with a third designated cesarean section operating room. The hospital offers both inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures ranging from general surgery to specialties such as orthopedics, including total joint replacement; oral; gynecologic; and ophthalmic procedures.

Recognizing the need for advancing treatment options for oncology patients on the Outer Banks, the hospital opened a new outpatient chemotherapy infusion and treatment service. The new service is provided in the ambulatory medical unit adjacent to the Emergency Department on the first floor of the hospital.

The Cancer Resource Center is dedicated to helping patients with cancer better understand their diagnosis and treatment and cope with the disease. The center offers a variety of services to help people dealing with cancer, including: emotional support; problem solving related to psychosocial needs, including finances, insurance, transportation and childcare; support for effective information gathering and education to enhance decision making; assistance with managing disruptions in work, school and family life; support groups, classes and special programs; and free print information about cancer and related topics.
